ARTIST OF THE WEEK: KALI UCHIS

Genre-Defying artist, Kali Uchis is a singer songwriter who was born in Columbia and raised in Virginia. The soul singer released a mixtape titled Drunken Babble in 2012, which the 22 year old doo wop singer self produced. Drunken Babble received much praise by music critics for its’ vintage-soul sound. Uchis also gained the recognition from R&B rapper Snoop Dogg (who has sold over 35 million albums worldwide) and music producer Diplo, who has worked with likes of No Doubt and Beyonce.

More recently the songstress teamed up with Snoop Dogg and Diplo for her first studio project Por Vida  which is available for free download. The mix tape features her two iTunes singles “Know What I Want” and “Lottery.” Be sure to follow her on Sound-cloud and check out her  latest music video, that Kali directed herself below!

 

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS

Our artists of the week is Marina Diamandis AKA  Marina and The Diamonds.  The alternative/electronic pop icon known for her retro fashion and playful lyrics about female identity and heartbreak released her first EP “The Crown Jewels” in 2009, and her debut album “The Family Jewels” in 2010, which went on to reach number five on the UK Album Charts. Her first studio album has some of her well known songs like “Oh No” and “I Am Not A Robot.” You could tell Diamandis was a star in the making.

In 2012, the Primadonna girl released her explosive “Electra Heart” which climbed all the way to number one in three countries. Most Recently Marina dropped her third studio album titled Froot which is her highest charting album in the United States.

Froot also marked the death of the heart on cheek wearing character Electra Heart. In an interview with “The Guardian” Diamandis said that Electra Heart, “had to die, it was the end. It was really fun while it lasted but those things are only meant to last a certain amount of time.” There is no doubt that Electra represented a very dark part of her that she is now overcoming.

Diamandis has talked  about dealing with depression  in the past and addresses it in her song titled “Happy”. In the song,  Marina’s vocals are paired with an amazing instrumentals as she sings “ Finally I have found the strength to be happy.”

“Happy” is a track you can hear on her synth-pop inspired album “Froot”. Froot is available now on iTunes and Spotify.

ARTIST OF THE WEEK: LION BABE

Jillian Harvey and Lucas Goodman (Astro Raw) have taken the music world by storm.  Founded in New York, the neo soul duo goes by the name Lion Babe. In an interview Harvey has said that, “We wanted there to be a certain duality, like there is with Blondie, with me as the frontwoman, you might think I’m Lion Babe, but it’s like, no, we’re Lion Babe. We liked that. It’s about embracing your uniqueness and rocking it.”

Lion Babe released their first track titled “Treat me Like Fire” in 2012 which gave the band some recognition. Two years later, the band signed with Interscope records and soon after they released an EP titled “Lion Babe” which featured rapper Childish Gambino and received high praise by many music critics for its electro-soul sound. Band member Jillian Harvey  was compared to the likes of Erykah Badu, who she has referenced along with Chaka Khan and The Beatles as some of the bands inspiration. Band member and producer Lucas Goodman has also cited Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix as some of his own personal inspirations.

More recently the artistic duo released the track “Wonder Woman” (produced by Pharrell Williams). The funky track reached number one on the Billboard charts. Lion Babe’s highly anticipated debut album has no title or release date yet, but you can check out some of their tracks below!
